There’s no short list of factors that make TREKK Design Group a one-of-a-kind business in the wastewater industry.

This women-owned, full-service civil engineering firm offers its customers more than most other wastewater system inspection companies. Project manager David Hamberlin says, “We pride ourselves on being a data-driven cleaning and CCTV company. TREKK is concerned about the deliverable more than just getting the camera through the pipe. So we do a lot of study and work to provide rehab recommendations for our clients. If you need quality data, that’s what we’re here for — that’s the niche we fill in the industry.”

Prioritizing technology

"Part of being a leader in the wastewater industry is delivering quality data and solutions to TREKK's customers regardless of size or need, which requires staying on top of the latest technology," Hamberlin says. “We are technology-driven. TREKK is always looking at the next cutting-edge technology — anything that we can do to improve our services and improve the lives of the clients in the communities we serve.”

This includes using software like ArcGIS online for all of their mapping needs, so that crews and supervisors can see progress in real time, and address any immediate issues as they encounter them.

Range of services

TREKK offers an array of services, from civil site design and transportation solutions, to mobile LiDAR survey and mapping. The 140-person firm also provides full-service SSES wastewater collections system field services, including cleaning and inspecting sewers across the Midwest.

Based in Kansas City, Missouri, TREKK opened its doors in 2002. It added CCTV services to its fleet four years later. The crews work throughout a generous portion of the Midwest, with cleaning and CCTV trucks and crews stationed in Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri; Omaha, Nebraska; and Memphis, Tennessee.

The team provides comprehensive services to evaluate, assess, diagnose, rehabilitate and even design wastewater systems.

“Our wastewater engineers and NASSCO-certified field technicians help communities understand the condition of their wastewater collections systems and prioritize improvements,” according to TREKK. This is accomplished through condition assessment inspections, smoke testing, manhole and inlet inspections, flow monitoring and sewer cleaning and televising.

TREKK also specializes in providing strategies to reduce inflow and infiltration — working with customers to coordinate and implement cost-effective I&I programs.

The firm provides wastewater system services to large municipalities — including the City of Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Department; the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District; the City of Omaha Sewer Maintenance Division; and SARP10 with the City of Memphis — as well as smaller clients in surrounding communities.

Equipment highlights

When purchasing new inspection equipment, there were several factors that TREKK was looking for to help increase overall productivity, including better support and service.

TREKK has three Envirosight trucks equipped with ROVVER X inspection crawlers, and another with the ROVVER X large-diameter crawler. There is an Envirosight sales partner near each of TREKK's four locations, with CCTV equipment that provides service and equipment repair — which has helped to keep downtime to a minimum.

“That was a big factor for us,” Hamberlin says. “When something happens, sometimes we can be back up and running within an hour or two, thanks to local Envirosight sales partners. Previously we had to ship our equipment out of state for repairs.

"The other standout feature in the ROVVER X crawler system is portability," he says. "The crews can easily move the system from an inspection vehicle to UTV to take their inspections off-road.

"Prioritizing innovation and efficiency with new technology over the years has allowed the crews at TREKK to not only increase productivity, but it has widened the type of services and projects that we complete. And the support from our Envirosight sales partner has been an added bonus.

“We have done a little bit of everything through the years. And Key Equipment Company has been a really great partner for our company, because when we have questions about different projects, they help us figure out a solution.”
